Sionga: Siopao na Panga ng Tuna

>> Saturday, September 6, 2014

Look at what we have discovered this morning. We went to SMS to watch the kids perform their dance number for the Dance Showdown by the Grade School Department. The morning was exciting as it was, and the school spirit seemed to be in everyone. Sweet and I, while waiting for the program to start, roamed around the campus to see what the kids will be enjoying, as much as look into new things for them to enjoy.

Lo and behold, something pink caught our attention. Sionga, short for Siopao na Panga ng Tuna was there waiving at us, inviting us to try.

We were about to buy but then the program started, so we had to go and see the kids perform, per grade level. When Lili and River were done, we immediately went back to the stall of Sionga: Siopao na Panga ng Tuna, bought one box which contains 6 yummy pieces.

Then I started asking questions about its origins, its flavors, and we were even handed the two kinds of sauces to use when eating the Sionga: Siopao na Panga ng Tuna.

Of course, my best taste goes to the one where there was no sauce added. I just love it plain. The sauces add variety of flavors and extra kick.

Bibingka Mania

>> Saturday, June 21, 2014

I was looking for a ride last night after buying wreath from one of the stalls of flower shops near St. Augustine Cathedral when I chanced upon this quaint and charming food place that sells Bibingka.. I love bibingka, so I bought one for P 50 only, not for me, but for my family to try.

Bibingka Manila is actually selling Manila/Luzon style bibingka with salted eggs. The last time I was able to eat some was when I was still living there for work related reasons.. It was good. So I was also excited to taste some of the Bibingka I bought.

We were scheduled to go home to our parents for the weekend so it is but timely to enjoy this treat.. It was past dinnertime when we tasted the treat. Of course, it was good. Will buy some more next time..

Nanay Choleng's Chocoleit Muron

>> Tuesday, April 1, 2014

During our NC Fiesta, the staff of Nanay Choleng's Chocoleit Muron sold some of their fave treat.. and they sold like hotcakes.. In just a few minutes they had to send for more to be delivered on site..

The Muron costs P 22 per piece but the price is right for the quality and taste of the Muron. Plus, it came with this really attractive packaging. It looks clean and presentable that you wouldn't think it's Muron that you have in your stash.. hehehe

My family have always been a fan of Tacloban delicacies, and Muron is just one of them. Here in Cagayan de Oro City, it is always difficult to find the best Muron as it is a food treat that is rooted in another city. We can only get one that's original when someone from Tacloban would visit. But now that Nanay Choleng's Chocoleit Muron is here, we no longer have that unfulfilled craving.. hehehe

We bought two packs for Pasalubong as we were also scheduled to go home to our parents' house in Opol the next day..

But of course we had to sample our share at home when we arrived after the NC Fiesta.. The inner part is filled with yumminess.. See the chocolate and peanuts? It's what is missing in all other Muron sold in the city.

My share is just one bite, considering I am on a special program. But it makes me happy to know that my family is happy with our Pasalubong..

Anyway, you can find a stall of Nanay Choleng's Chocoleit Muron in almost all malls in Cagayan de Oro City. Plus they have special sauces to go with your order if you buy from the stalls. They can also be found at the Mercato de Oro..

Little Girl is Craving for Shawarma

>> Friday, October 11, 2013

When Lili craves for something, I usually give in because it is not always that she asks me for something. I take it as a reward for her hard work in school as well as for being a good daughter.

She is not choosy and her cravings are always simple. But now that I am into my program, and my food is limited to protein, she is also aligning her cravings to those where she can still spend time with me. So for Shawarma, she asked me for Chicken flavored Shawarma so I can also eat.

That's how thoughtful Lili is. Applying the Law of Attraction, who wouldn't want to give more to this adorable, thoughtful gift from the Universe..

I love you Bhabie.. Thank you Thank You Thank you for being you..

Serendipity: Pancho Crinkle Sandwich

>> Sunday, July 8, 2012

Bought a variety of breads and cookies from New Leaf today. I love the fact that their breads are all good, specially the fresh ones. I also love the cookies that looked like knurled knobs that Lili loves so much. Then there the Crinkles that my daughter drools for every time. Imagine, she can actually eat 2 in a sitting.

Anyway, part of my loot was a bag of Pancho that was just fresh from the oven. When we arrived home this afternoon, we had snacks and well, I do not know what possessed me, but I somehow pulled the Pancho apart, placed a crinkle in between and ate it like a Pancho-Crinkle Sandwich.

I swear, it was good.

Beef Tapa By The Sea...

>> Tuesday, June 5, 2012

This is just one of those moments when one is alone and there is nothing left to do but eat.. Well, actually, I didn't have breakfast or have taken anything before we left for the hotel last Sunday, for the make up and hair style of the wedding entourage, of which, my sister and Lili were part of. We left the house at four in the morning, when we were informed that the make up artists were already there, as well as the hairdressers.

So why was I alone? The wedding coordinator asked us, people who are not part of the entourage, to go out of the hotel room, because the room was quite small with all of us inside. I was actually relieved  for it gave me a chance to go to the restaurant and eat breakfast..

The first thing that caught my eye, when I got to the restaurant area, was the on going road construction, instead of the usual view of the bay and harbor.  But I was told by the waiters that once the construction will be over, everything will look good again. The said road will actually connect to the Laguindingan Seaport.

So that's what I saw while I enjoyed my coffee, alone at the Harbor Lights Hotel Restaurant.. My hot coffee is part of my Filipino breakfast which I ordered upon entering the restaurant.

It was quite hot in the spot that I wanted to sit on so I opted to move where there was a shade of a tree, at the edge of the platform. It's actually okay because I could not see what I wanted to see anyway.

Sipping my coffee followed by the hearty breakfast of Fried Eggs, the way I wanted, Garlic Fried Rice, and best of all, my all time favorite breakfast viand, wherever I go, Beef Tapa. The plate also comes with fresh tomatoes, cucumber and some shredded papaya.

And the ice cold Mango juice makes all the difference.

I paid P 213 for the meal, but on the receipt, it appeared to be less than that, just P 0.20 actually. But since it was a good meal I enjoyed, and a really good service, I left a little tip for the waiter too.

If one has checked in the hotel, breakfast is actually enjoyed as a complimentary meal for the guests.

Chicken Proven (Proventriculus of Chicken)

>> Wednesday, May 23, 2012

I have always wanted to post about this street food that people love to eat, not only here in Cagayan de Oro City, but in other parts of the Philippines. However, I am not able to do so because I find the smell of used oil too intoxicating, especially when simply passing by Pabayo Street, where stalls selling Chicken Proven have sprouted like mushrooms for years and counting, leaving the street totally unhygienic and polluted. Simply put, I am NOT a fan of the food they are selling there.

But one time, while waiting for my mom to come down from her office building, we parked the car just beside this singular stall that sells Chicken Proven. Actually, I wouldn't know about it if my father didn't mention it. I didn't smell any stinky odor of used oil, and the place was clean enough. There were even two tables for two groups to occupy, should that be the case.

And just like all other stalls, they sell compact rice, in lieu of "puso", or hanging rice. Most of their customers here are students from the schools nearby, as well as passersby coming from the different offices in the area.

Although there is just one attendant at that time, she was able to show me how fast their service is, in a clean and organized fashion.

What makes the Chicken Proven more tasty is the sauce.. But unlike those we saw at Pabayo Street, the sauces are placed in closed containers, which only gets opened when customers use them, as they drizzle the sauce on the Chicken Proven.

There are two types of sauce. One is Spicy and Hot, that's the one with brownish color, and the Spicy and Sweet, in orange color. With sauces in their containers, you are assured there is NO DOUBLE DIPPING here..

Now if you're wondering how Chicken Proven is made, it is made out of the proventriculus of a chicken, seasoned and coated with flour or corn starch, then deep-fried and served with vinegar dipping or a specially-made sauce (sweet and sour ketchup mixed with pepper, etc). In Cagayan de Oro City, you may try Chicken Proven located in many different places like divisoria, Corrales Avenue along Xavier University, and as mentioned above, Pabayo-Chavez streets. Find them in several "stalls" in these streets. Chicken Proven costs 5 pesos (less than $USD 1 = 42 pesos [varies]) per stick. Although Chicken Proven is quite addicting, especially with specially-made sauce, I must warn you that it is bad for the health. A little may be okay, but eating them every day won't be good for the body. Think of uric acid and gall bladder/kidney stones. Get the picture? Since Chicken Proven would go well with "puso" (a type of rice wrapped in coconut leaves and steamed sold at 5 pesos each), some people eat them as regular daily meals. The combination may satisfy  hunger in an instant, and may be easy for the budget, but let's all be conscious of its long-term effect..

And again, there is no other Chicken Proven I can recommend in this city, but the one located at Tiano/Del Pilar Streets.. Lastly, this is NOT a paid post.. Just a happy customer..

SLERS Chorizo

>> Wednesday, April 25, 2012

I am a Tapa, Longanisa, Tocino and Chorizo addict. I have favorites and I have tasted not so good ones too. Though I always make it a point not to remember the bad ones, and only reminisce of the yummy ones, I can't help but remember not to buy them Anyway, I was taught that in cooking any of them, you have to have water first before oil.. Except for the ready to fry kind where oil is the only thing you cook them in.
In cooking the SLERS Chorizo we bought at SaveMore, of course I also used water...
But if there was one thing different from all other cooking process, I remembered what the SLERS attendant told me as he handed me my packet of Chorizo. He told me, and I listened, that as soon as the water would boil, I should put oil...

After putting oil, of course it continued cooking the SLERS Chorizo when the water evaporated. The oil browned the SLERS Chorizo, and that added to the yummy looking treat on our table during breakfast...

Most people, including myself, love a healthy treat and this SLERS Chorizo is actually one that I can rank among the healthy indulgences of life. See, the reason why oil is needed to is that, the chorizo is made of solid meat. I saw with my own eyes that there isn't any trace of pork fat in it. If you use a healthier kind of oil, it will be wiser too.

This SLERS Chorizo is available for only P 36.00/10 pieces. That's actually quite affordable..

Choco Turon

>> Monday, April 23, 2012

For those who have a sweet tooth like us, here's what we had yesterday, on a humid Sunday... It was just easy to buy the Turon from Monterey Market Express near Corpus Christi, and served them with Crumpy chocolate which melts unto the hot Turon.. And when it was time to eat it, my oh my... It was really good.

By the way, this Turon from Monterey Market Express is really yummy, even without the chocolate topping.. And it's clean too. I should know, I know the people who prepared them...

Simple and yummy..

Liempo King

>> Monday, April 16, 2012

My sister and I went to eat lunch at this small food shop near her former school, with her wearing her scrub tops, after her weekly rounds at the place where she works. It's actually just beside The Barn, and eating at this new joint is actually a good experience for us. The staff  were nice, and the food arrived on time.

Their approach to cooking Liempo is quite different from the usual fair. Although there have been many Liempo places which sells Liempo in a Lechon-like manner, Liempo King offers a different experience as one takes a bite of the bits and pieces of sliced Liempo. From the size when it was cut, marinated and broilled, Liempo King Liempo looks totally like a whole new face of Liempo. The taste is commendable as it is cooked just right. What's more, the crispiness of Lechon skin can be crunched upon evey Liempo King liempo skin.. I wouldn't say it's better than lechon though, but, it is better than other Lechon-Liempo products that's around Cagayan de Oro City..

Lookie... it is yummy inside and out.. Crunchy skin, tasty meat that imagining it while doing this post makes me salivate... hahahaha

Alberto's Pizza

>> Sunday, October 23, 2011

This is an overdue post. Some weeks ago, we waited for my sister from her errand and we met at Alberto's Pizza at Gaerlan Street.

Alberto's Ham and Egg Pizza which has Ham, Ham Sausage, Hamonado, Egg, Tomatoes and Onions . It was actually new to me to have egg as one of the key ingredients in a pizza.  For a P 100, for 9 inch and P 140 for 12 inches, it's a good buy. Affordable yet high on flavors.

Alberto's Meaty Royale Pizza which has Hungarian Sausage, Pepperoni, Salami, Ham and Bacon with real Mozzarella Cheese, P 230 for a 12 inch pizza is superb. Good taste, yet affordable for the pockets.

Alberto's has been around since two years ago, I think, but first I tasted it was in Cebu. It was just recently that I heard it has come to CDO. And I didn't really know where it was located until just a few months ago.

Click on the image above for details of this pizza joint. There are lots of different flavors to choose from and delivery is actually free.
