BAUNO or WHITE MANGO

>> Sunday, September 27, 2009

PLEASE CLICK ON THE THUMBNAIL PHOTOS TO ENLARGE...

My mom arrived from her travel from Gingoog City. When we met her at Jollibee Gaisano Mall, she had a bag full of "Bauno" or otherwise called as White Mango. A fruit that can only be found in Gingoog's mountains..

My mother loves this fruit so much. She also discovered this from her friends in the NCIP. If my mother did not work closely with the tribal communities, I doubt we'd ever be able to get to know exotic fruits such as this..

See how the meat looks? It's white. It's also milky when you eat it this way..

In an attempt to make it more exciting, I decided to make a candied Bauno.. I used my handy dandy oven toaster. I simply peeled one Bauno, washed it, and placed it on the tray. Poured brown sugar on top for the syrup, and boy, it was oh so YUMMY..

When all the brown sugar melted, it softened the Bauno.. Best eaten while still warm and topped with Vanilla ice cream..

MARANG AND ITS SEEDS

I was able to buy this huge Marang for only P 20.00 today. Had this for lunch.. OMG! It's oh so good!

After eating Marang, what do you usually do with the seeds? Most of you would say that they end up in the trash.. But here are a few ways that they can still be utilized...
  • They can be roasted and eaten similarly like peanuts...
  • They can be roasted and peeled, then powdered, then taken with a little water as a good way to relieve cough
  • They can also be powdered and be made as mosquito repellant
Ha! The first one is from experience, the rest are from Science Investigatory Projects way back when I was in High School..

A GERMAN SHOE SITE TO BEHOLD..

I was making cookies when Lili called me and asked if she can get to see shoes online. Hmm.. Seems that my little girl shares the same passion as I over shoes.. So I showed her my favorite German Shoe Site...
If it's Schuhe you are looking for, there's this wonderful site for all those classy and trendy shoes. It's kinda like your German shoe shop online.. They have everything to your heart's content, including those sexy black Stiefel and the trendy and stylish, not to mention, sporty,  Damenschuhe.. Ahh.. I really love seeing them page by page.... They have all top brands like Converse , Timberland ,Chucks and many more... I love shoes and theirs is what any shoe addict can call a shoe heaven, lol.. Browsing through the site is not at all difficult. Although I could not understand the words as they are in German, my translator has provided me the best help to decipher every word. So that explains the words used here, hahaha.. The site may be intended for German audience but because the shoes totally rock, I can't help but browse some more and more.. Funny, I could almost see myself drool over the beautiful creations on display.. I have not seen some of the designs featured in the site. Ahh.. makes my mouth water.. I am totally a shoe addict. Imagine? I could hardly understand the site, yet I stayed on to see more and more designs. As if I can go ahead and pick them up, pay for them and have them wrapped to be given to my own self as a gift for being a good girl..
Hmm.. This reminds me of how I used to behave around shoes.. It doesn't matter where I was, as long as I see a very nice pair and I have the money for it, I buy it... That was when my life was yet revolving around me only, and Lili was not yet in the scene.. Every month I would have at least 3-4 pairs with a bag to match.. Now, I still love shoes but I buy mostly for Lili...hahaha.. And my daughter loves that even more..
Whew.. shoes...shoes..shoes.. or should I say, Schuhe.. Schuhe.. Schuhe..
OMG! My cookies are even shaped like shoes.. hahaha.. This is what I get when I think about them so much... wink.. wink.. wink..

GOLDILOCKS MERIENDA TREATS

Brownies

Butter Cake

Whenever we chance upon a Goldilocks branch, we buy these two goodies and have them stored in the refrigerator. These two are good for merienda (snacks) especially because they are not as bad as all the other sweet treats for my parents' health.. My father especially likes the butter cake paired with a steaming hot coffee..

FAVORITE DUNKIN DONUTS TREAT

Whenever I pass by any Dunkin Donut outlet, I buy myself a piece of Choco Filled Donut and a Chocko Wacko..and a glass of Icy Choco-- I am a choco lover so I need not explain the flavors here..
Anyway, last week , I chanced upon Dunkin Donuts in Ororama Cogon after I bought Honeysweet Learning Center giveaways from National Bookstore, and as expected, I bought the donuts. I was also craving for Tuna, BCT (Bacon Coleslaw and Tomatoes) and Ham and Cheese Bunwich so I bought the fun size Bunwich to have all three but in smaller sizes.. and of course, the Icy Choco.
Unfortunately for this Dunkin Donut outlet, I am not happy with their service and I swear I am not buying from there again... See, the Icy Choco came with a few ice that is not even able to make the Icy Choco "icy".. I had to ask for additional ice.. Next, the BCT lacks the C and the T.. Yes, it is a fun size BCT, but it should still have the complete ingredients. After all, what's a BCT without the two letters... When I asked for extra tissue, the crew said I should pay P 1.50 and another P 2.50 for extra sachet of ketchup..She gave me only one ketchup.. To top it all, a donut fell from the display rack while she took the other customer's order. She picked it up and placed it separately on the same tray.. When she thought all of us customers left, she arranged the donuts on the display rack and the one that fell that she separated is now arranged together with those on the rack.. UGH!

When I got home, I was having doubts as to the possibility that my donuts also shared the same fate as that of the one that fell.. so I checked my donuts out before eating them..

The water quenches thirst and heals ailments and all others.. That is if you believe it will.. The photo above shows the water we fetched from Divine Mercy for our Uncle who is in Butuan.. He drinks the water and our other relatives could see that he is healed.. That's why when the come here and we get to visit Divine Mercy, we fetch as much water as we can..

EATING ON A STUDENT BUDGET..

The food you see here are the two foodies I usually see my students eat at BSU.. The first is the fruit salad  and the latter is the pansit canton.. These are are just a few of the low cost budget foodies my students can buy from the canteen. The fruit salad is P 5.00 per cup while the pansit canton is at P 12.00... If they only have P 50.00 they can already eat and go home safely.. Still others opt not to buy their own food to make sure they can go home at 8:30 p.m. safely or be able to buy all the other needs to sustain them till the next payday...

FROM MY KITCHEN #4: CHEEZY CUCHINTA

>> Saturday, September 5, 2009

Hello everyone, I have started this food meme for me to share and hopefully for anyone and everyone to join. I call this "FROM MY KITCHEN" since the plan is for us to feature food made or prepared from our kitchen.. Whether you cooked it yourself or repackaged the meal to suit your foodie fans... Just tell us how you did it and that's it... This is open Saturdays as most of us have more time to cook during weekends... But you can start sharing your entries from 7:01 pm Fridays and ends 12:01 AM Tuesdays... Please copy the badge and link it to this post. Thanks and happy cooking---

For my entry this week, I wanna share with you CHEEZY CUCHINTA.. since it is MY FAVORITE KAKANIN...I know the usual kutchinta is topped with freshly grated young coconuts... This time, to do away with the painstaking process of grating the coconut or as a solution to not having a young coconut available to grate, I have topped my kutsinta with grated cheese.. It is also advised to wrap  each kutsinta with plastic wrap once cheese is already placed on top. That seals in the cheese flavor and when cooled inside the refrigerator, it gives out a very nice cheese aroma the moment it is taken out to eat... Try it, it's oh so good... YUMMY!

There are two ways to make Kutsinta so below are the two different recipes...

Recipe #1:
Ingredients:
1 cup rice flour
1 tsp lye water
3 cups water
2 cups packed brown sugar

Procedure: Mix all the ingredients in a bowl; beat well. Half-fill a muffin pan with the batter, then steam covered over 2 inches of water for about 30 minutes. Top with grated cheese (or like what I said the usual grated young coconut).
Recipe #2
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups water
1 tsp. lija (lye water)
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
red food coloring
Procedure: Add water to flour gradually while beating. Then mix in the remaining ingredients, plus a dash of red food coloring. Continue beating until well blended. Pour on ungreased molders (3/4 full). Cover with cheese cloth and steam for 30 minutes or until done. Serve with fresh grated cheese (or like what I said the usual grated young coconut).

Note: Boil water in steamer before placing molds. If you don't have the steamer, you can also use your rice cooker...

I gave it to my parents..Anyhow, Thanks MeadJohnson for always remembering me in your list.. I have been getting samples and freebies from them since the time I got pregnant, till now...
