I am excited to share this new healthy helper that I just got from Tupperware Brands. They call this Smooth Chopper, but I call this, Great Idea. hehehehe.. 

To use this is very simple, and you can actually have tons of uses for this baby. For me, its main job is to help me keep up with my healthy lifestyle. It has always been a problem for me to make my own shake or smoothie. Now, it is no longer a problem with this handy helper. 

It's so easy to use, you simply have to pull the string, and this action doubles as an exercise for me, hahahaha.. Need to tighten the arm muscles.. wink wink.. I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of the Apple, Banana and all other ingredients in this smoothie.. 

The blade is sharp, it takes a few pulls and my smoothie is ready.. 

Even ice is very easy for this baby to handle.. I can have smoothie anytime even without electricity.. 

Now to start with another, Vanilla Banana Parsley Smoothie.. 

Hurrah for this wonderful invention..

It Just Grew..

We were on our way yesterday to school and while my father was maneuvering the car to a halt, this is what caught our eyes.. Watermelon growing in our front lawn. We didn't plant it there, it just grew? How? Hmmm.. My mom said that probably someone ate watermelon and spew the seeds there, and it grew. Rain and sunshine fed it, but not us. Thus, we consider it a blessing. 

I shared the photo I took with my co teachers and one of them said that it was a sign for good things to come. Good luck is what it is meant. If that is so, then I accept that explanation, hehehe..

Balut

Andrew Zimmerman made a great feature about Balut and all other exotic foods in the Philippines on Bizarre Foods. And I would like to thank him for it. From that video on you tube, a lot more came and I am quite happy that Balut now has international following. 

Our trainer at one of the contact centers I worked with was an American who we introduced Balut to, but he never wanted a bite. Well, we respected his disgust to the food, but now I am seeing a lot of foreigners getting hooked with Balut. 

Others featured Balut and even came up with a challenge for their friends and colleagues. Here's another video, and this time, on how to eat Balut.

From the video above, I am amazed that Balut can now be available abroad.. Wow.. Maharlika serves Balut, and it's no longer a street food there.. Yay :-)

Ordinance No. 12685: The Half-cup Rice Ordinance

Food establishments in Cagayan de Oro are now required to serve half cup of rice to avoid rice wastage. Data released earlier this year by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI – DOST), reported that each Filipino wastes an average of 3.29 kilograms of rice every year. The rice wastage in 2008 amounted to 296, 869 metric tons (MT) which is equivalent to 12.2 percent of the rice import that same year. Said loss amounted to about P7.3 billion, which could have fed around two million Filipinos. An innovative solution is necessary to minimize wastage, that will be a great help to boost the Philippine food security. Addressing this concern at the local level, City Councilor Annie Daba authored Ordinance No. 12685, known as the Half-cup Rice Ordinance of Cagayan de Oro City, to encourage the responsible consumption of rice as embodied in the Presidential Proclamation No. 494 by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. The ordinance mandates that “all food establishments including restaurants, cafeterias, caterers, fast-food chains and other related food services in Cagayan de Oro City to include one-half cup serving of rice in their menu with the corresponding one-half price as an option for the public customers. This ordinance was enacted last November 2013, and the memorandum is currently being distributed to restaurants, canteens, caterers, fast food chains and hotels. By August, food establishments are expected to have the full implementation of the half-cup rice servings on their menu. 

Violating the said ordinance shall have its consequences. The fine for those violating the said ordinance will be set at P1,000 and P2,000 for the first and second offenses, respectively. For the third time offender, penalty of P3,000 fine and the cancellation of their business permit. Succeeding offenses by food establishments will cause the filing of an appropriate case in court with a fine of P3,000 to P5,000 or an imprisonment of one day to twelve months.

Multiply Goes To Cagayan de Oro City: Lunch With Multiply Staff and Top Merchants In CDO

Last week, I was one of the bloggers invited by Multiply for a luncheon meeting. It was a meeting of Multiply staff, Multiply merchants and bloggers from Cagayan de Oro City Bloggers Inc. who are also members of Multiply.Com, active and still using the old Multiply set-up. 

It was a very good meeting, in the sense that I feel empowered to know that some of Multiply's top merchants are actually from Cagayan de Oro City. Two of the ladies in photo are selling their items at Multiply, and guess what? They are just two of the top merchants invited to have lunch with us. The lady in white is even younger than most of us in the room, and have been earning quite well in her multiply business. 

I love how friendly the staff at Multiply are. The three of them explained to us how Multiply works, and encouraged us to support local merchants bu shopping at Multiply. At the same time, we were also encouraged to open our shops to sell. It got me thinking to sell too. Imagine, the new Multiply interface is much easier to navigate and safer than my usual alternative shopping site, Ebay.. 

Anyway, while Multiply staff were discussing, waiters at Siam Restaurant in Lim Ket Kai Mall continuously served separate platters of yummy dishes which we had during our lunch meeting. That deep fried fish above with the yummy topping of green mangoes and peanuts mixed in its sauce. 

The unforgettable Pad Thai. and the Green Curry that made me forget my name, lol.. Well, actually, I forgot to ask its name, hahaha.. 

The Thai fried rice...

And the refreshing tropical drink that leaves a pleasant taste that lingers in the mouth.. 

And when everything is done, photo ops followed... 

I had myself pose with one of Cagayan de Oro's top Multiply merchant, Boobie. 

I was told that she makes the best Chocolate cake.. and she sells made to order cakes in her Multiply shop (Perfect Endings).. well, I will check her Multiply shop one of these days.. In the mean time, let me show you what I got from the P 1000 eGC that Multiply gave each of us...

They came from two separate sellers, and in both shops I enjoyed the free shipping offer..  Also, because I was so inspired by the new face of Multiply.Com, I may open my shop in the succeeding days. I am yet thinking of what to sell.. So watch for it! Will blog about it here.

Malawi's Pizza: Pizza with a Purpose

I have heard of so many strategies to raise funds for the needy. But here's a delicious idea that I have seen online. And I salute the owner of Malawi's in Provo for this really generous kindness. Imagine, every time one orders pizza, or for every meal one would buy, they will provide a nutritious meal to a child in Malawi, Africa. I guess that's how they got the cafe's name too.

So whether you order pizza, pasta, salads or desserts, it's a one-to-one donation that goes a long way. I wish we have that here too, so that many people can partake of the delicious food, all with fresh ingredients, and help the children in Malawi, Africa as well. That's not just doing good business but also building good karma.

Maybe this idea can also be applied here in our country. What with the many children that are hungry in the far flung barangays. What with the many school children who go to school with nothing in their stomachs to help them absorb the lessons at school. What with the many hungry mouths, too many to feed, for a father with a meager income. Ah.. This is indeed a very good idea. But not too appealing for many restaurant-owners, concessionaires and businessmen. If I will see a store or cafe or restaurant who will do this same thing, I would truly be thankful.

Polvoron Cookies, Ednie Galendez Villacorta and the Search for the Tough Jobs Philippines 2010

I was visiting my Auntie Irma at her workplace when I was possessed by some angel to buy the Polvoron Cookies in photo. Possessed? Sounds like a negative phenomenon. Uhm.. Not really. It's just that I saw something which drove me to buy 5 packs of Polvoron Cookies without ever knowing how they tasted.

They tasted heavenly! I swear I could have bought more had I known it tasted really good.So here is how it all started. My Auntie Irma and I were busy talking and we saw from out her window a guy who was carrying so much load. I think there were seven plastic bags of different colors that I saw and all of them were full, but from a distance we know not what magical goodies were in those bags. Not until the guy finally approached a teacher from out the window and asked if she will buy from him, but unfortunately, the said teacher was not able to hear him quite right so she handed him a five peso coin. The vendor declined and said that he  was not begging, he was asking her if she will buy something from him. The teacher may have felt a sudden jolt that she scrammed like a cat, so I asked the vendor from the window what he was selling and allowed him to get inside my aunt's office.. 

And soon enough, when I saw the Polvoron Cookies, I bought five packs. Auntie Irma also bought packs of peanuts. I asked him if I could take his photo and he said it was fine with him, so there it is, actually what I caught was him accepting Auntie Irma's payment for the peanuts..  We ate some and I took the rest home.

What's amazing about this is that, if you look closely, Ednie has one defective arm, yet he strives to earn a living in a dignified way. Other people with the same situation would use their defects to ask people to pity them and ultimately ask money. Begging is such an easy way to make money, but the very least dignified, or should I say, undignified way to do so..

I admire Ednie's strength and determination. I would have posted this before I left for Manila to attend the Search for the Toughest Jobs Philippines but I got busy. So during the launching, I thought of entering Ednie's job  as the toughest.. and I just did..

The water quenches thirst and heals ailments and all others.. That is if you believe it will.. The photo above shows the water we fetched from Divine Mercy for our Uncle who is in Butuan.. He drinks the water and our other relatives could see that he is healed.. That's why when the come here and we get to visit Divine Mercy, we fetch as much water as we can..
